Norwegian Volvo Amazon club

We’re delighted to welcome NVAK, who are holding their annual national gathering in Lofoten this summer (2026). As one of Norway’s largest classic car clubs, they have filled our courtyard with beautiful Volvo Amazons in every colour imaginable.

Every year, we welcome a wide variety of groups and organisations. Many choose Lofoten Sommerhotell because of our excellent location, spacious outdoor areas, well-equipped auditorium, numerous meeting rooms, large gymnasium for indoor activities, and, of course, our friendly staff.

And naturally, there’s our breakfast—which receives plenty of praise from our guests.

Volvo Amazon – A Swedish Motoring Legend

The Volvo Amazon is one of Scandinavia’s most iconic classic cars. Produced between 1956 and 1970, it became renowned for its elegant styling, exceptional build quality, and remarkable reliability. With its graceful lines and distinctive chrome details, the Amazon represents an era when cars were designed to be both beautiful and built to last.

Technologically, the Amazon was well ahead of its time. In 1959, it became the world’s first mass-produced car to feature three-point seat belts as standard equipment for the front seats—an innovation developed by Volvo that has since saved millions of lives around the world. The robust B16, B18, and later B20 engines also earned a reputation for being exceptionally durable.

Over the years, the Amazon was available as a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, and a practical estate (station wagon). It became popular as a family car, a rally car, and even a police vehicle. Many Amazons remain on the road today, more than 60 years after they were built.

Fun Facts

  • More than 667,000 Volvo Amazons were produced.

  • The original Swedish name was Amason, but it had to be changed outside Sweden for legal reasons.

  • The B18 engine is regarded as one of Volvo’s most durable engines, with many examples exceeding one million kilometres without major engine repairs.

  • The Amazon was a successful rally car during the 1960s, achieving several international victories.

  • Today, it enjoys a large and active enthusiast community, with clubs and gatherings all over the world.

The Volvo Amazon is more than just a classic car—it is a symbol of Swedish engineering, pioneering safety, and timeless design.
